The visible hair shaft is made of keratinised cells, while the follicle beneath the scalp is the structure involved in producing hair. At the base of the follicle, rapidly dividing cells contribute to formation of the hair fibre, while surrounding structures help support the growth process. 

This is why understanding hair fall requires looking at the scalp, follicle and hair-growth cycle—not only the visible strand.
